Banks - Financial Institutions

Banking in Spain operates within a well-regulated financial system that is overseen by the country’s central bank, Banco de España.
The Banco de España (Bank of Spain) serves as the country’s central bank and is responsible for monetary policy, financial stability, and the supervision of banks and financial institutions.
Additionally, the European Central Bank (ECB) plays a role in overseeing the stability of the eurozone financial system.
The Spanish banking sector includes various types of institutions, including commercial ,savings (cajas) and cooperative banks (cajas rurales), as well as credit unions (cooperativas de crédito).
Commercial banks like Banco Santander and BBVA offer a wide range of financial services, while savings banks traditionally catered to local communities, though many have merged or been acquired in recent years.
Major Spanish banks operate both domestically and internationally, providing a wide range of financial services to individuals, businesses, and institutions.
They also provide a comprehensive range of financial services, including savings and current accounts, loans and mortgages, credit cards, investment products, insurance, and wealth management services.
Online and mobile banking services are widely available, making it convenient for customers to manage their finances.
Spain has a well-developed banking infrastructure with a network of branches and ATMs across the country.
Most major cities and towns have multiple bank branches, and ATMs are readily available for cash withdrawals and other banking transactions.
Since the beginning of the credit crunch that started in 2008 Spanish banks have suffered in a big way, the housing bubble that was created around new houses has come tumbling down leaving alot of financial institutions with severe financial problems.
However there are still quite a few that remain very strong.
