El Golfo

El Golfo, a picturesque village on the west coast of Lanzarote, is one of the island’s must-visit destinations for travelers seeking natural beauty, unique landscapes, and authentic local experiences.

Nestled within the boundaries of the Timanfaya National Park, El Golfo is famed for its stunning green lagoon, dramatic volcanic scenery, and vibrant fishing community.

El Golfo offers a serene escape where visitors can experience the raw beauty of Lanzarote’s volcanic origins and enjoy a taste of authentic Canarian culture.

What to See and Do in El Golfo

1. Lago Verde (Green Lagoon): The village’s most famous attraction, this striking green lagoon, formed in a volcanic crater, gets its unusual color from the algae that inhabit its waters. It’s set against a backdrop of black volcanic sand and red cliffs, creating a dramatic contrast that is perfect for photography. A viewing platform above the lagoon offers panoramic views of the surrounding area.

2. El Golfo Beach: This black-sand beach is a great place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Lanzarote’s volcanic coastline. While swimming is not recommended due to strong currents, visitors can walk along the shore, enjoy the sound of crashing waves, or hunt for olivine gemstones, a green volcanic mineral often found on the beach.

3. Seafood Restaurants: El Golfo is renowned for its fresh seafood. The village’s waterfront is lined with traditional restaurants serving local specialties such as grilled fish, paella, and seafood stews. Enjoying a meal with ocean views at sunset is one of the most memorable experiences in El Golfo.

4. Charco de los Clicos: Another fascinating volcanic phenomenon, this semi-circular crater filled with green water is an extension of the Lago Verde. It’s surrounded by striking black sand dunes and makes for an incredible natural sight.

5. Coastal Walks: For those who enjoy hiking, several trails offer stunning views of Lanzarote’s volcanic coastline. The walk from El Golfo to the nearby Timanfaya National Park is particularly popular, allowing visitors to explore the unique landscapes shaped by past volcanic eruptions.
